Starting Klein Media
Joel and I were about an hour into our 5 hour drive to my aunt and uncle’s cabin this past Spring and Joel said “I think I need to start an LLC for my self-employment.” He explained it was just a formality since self-employment was already part of his work. What made him hesitant about starting was all of the filing and paperwork that went into starting a business. That’s where I come in; I ‘excel’ at spreadsheets and I’m obsessive about organization. I also have a business degree, so I happily offered to handle the business side of things that Joel considers to be boring. My condition: if we were going to do this, we would really pursue it- we would market our company and seek new clients. For the next 4 hours of the drive, we made plans. We brainstormed business names, defined job titles and duties, and dreamed of the possibilities in the video world. There was a lot yet to be discussed, but we had a solid framework by the time we reached our destination.
I spent the next month in research mode as I wrote the 27-page business plan that included financial predictions, details of what our company would offer, how we would market ourselves, and learning more about video production in Minnesota. In the end of June, it became official and Klein Media LLC was born.
Looking back, it seemed like it was a long time coming; Joel has the talent and connections to get the company off the ground, and I have the business mind to keep it growing. We know it will take effort to keep up and gain clients, but we also know that this is an important service in the community.
This more than pet project keeps us busy, but also keeps us dreaming of ways we can help others use videos in their communications, especially in light of COVID. This small business has some big goals and we are excited to grow as professionals to build this business together.
